This week I went turkey hunting with some friends, Mike was from Oregon, Kim from Washington and John was from Las Vegas. We had a great hunt with John taking this beautiful Merriam’s turkey at 20 yards. I called one in the day before to 15 yards but he could not get a shot.

While hunting we saw and heard something that I have never witnessed before. After hearing a few hen clucks we set up hoping that a Tom was near by. I called and a bird came in making hen clucks then started strutting. After strutting it started gobbling but the gooble didn’t sound right and it was not very loud. The coloring was wrong for a Tom as well. It looked just like a hen with a small body, gray color on it’s feathers and the head was gray with a little red. It was the darndest thing I have ever heard and seen. Last year in the same place I called in a hen with a 5″ to 6″ beard. Maybe its something in the water!

If you have had a similar experience we would love to hear about it.

This years turkey hunt was one of the best I have had. My son, Chris, called in this awesome Tom to the end of my muzzleloader barrel. Yes, I said the end of my barrel. He was so close that I could not shoot because he was in full strut the whole time. Here is the full story -

The day started off with us walking and calling just after day break. Off in the distance a group of coyotes start yipping and then we heard gobbling in the distance. We moved into position and set up with the intent of drawing them in. I told Chris that I felt they would come in silent because we had not heard anything from them before the coyotes. Chris started calling and sure enough no sound until they came within 20 yards and finally a gobble. The area was covered with thick brush which made it difficult for me to determine if the turkeys in front of me were big enough to shoot but one by one they walked into a clearing giving me a better look, four jakes and one hen, and I made the decision not to shoot.

While this was going on we heard a gobble to our left about 1/2 mile away. After passing up the four Jakes we decided to check out that distant gobble. We stopped about 100 yards from where we thought the gobble had come from and started calling. We received a response but he wouldn’t come any closer. From our vantage point we could see the Tom and his hens and we thought that they wanted to move up the draw. We made the decision to move and try to get in front of them. When we arrived where we thought they would come Chris put up our hen decoy about 15 yards to the front of me and then he went behind me 30 yards down the hill and to the right and proceeded to call. After the first call we got a response just up the hill behind me. I had to turn around and reposition myself. Soon after the first gobble we could hear the Tom drumming. I have heard turkeys drum before but nothing like this, very loud and I could fill the vibration. Approximately 5 minutes later he was in full strut about 15 yards in front of me and then he gobbled two times. I could not shoot because when a turkey is in full strut his head is tucked in close to his chest. All of a sudden he came strait down the hill at me. I think he saw the hen decoy and was coming fast and furious and within an arms length of me. My choice of weapon for this hunt was my Knight Black Powder Muzzleloader. This gun has two safeties and I had taken one off but forgot the second so my first shot was a click with him standing at the end of my barrel. The Tom jumped back and ran 15 yards. While he was running I took off my second safety and was able to shoot him while he was running up the hill.

What a wonderful time I had with my son out in God’s great country. This is a memory we will never forget. Thanks Chris for your great calling and remembering to put up the hen decoy.

Traveled to the Salmon River near Challis, Idaho to do some steelhead fishing. Steelhead are rainbow trout that spend time in the ocean, then travel to their spawning grounds on freshwater rivers much like salmon. They can get quite large during their time in the ocean. I landed 3 steelhead and was able to harvest them because they were hatchery raised fish (hatchery fish have a clipped adipose fin). The two largest fish were nearly 30” and 33” long and weighed between 10 and 12 lbs.

Here’s is Cathy’s California Bighorn Sheep. She got it on the New Foundland mountains in North central Utah, on the 4th of Nov. The stalk was 3 hours and 10 minutes. She left the truck at 1:10, and climbed 1,682 vertical ft. The ram was bedded at 221 yards, which she felt was a little to far, so she close the distance another 70 yards and shot him from 142 yards at 4:21. She waited 8 minutes for him to stand, then took the shot. He gave almost no reaction, except to walk about 5 yards, then tipped over backwards, and rolled down about 10 yards. Then my buddies went to work. They arrived back at the truck about 40 minutes after dark.

Larry

What a great email I just received from a good hunting friend of mine Larry Mower. CONGRATULATIONS to his wife Cathy who took this great Utah California ram on Nov 4. I’m so thrilled for Cathy, Larry and their family. They love to hunt and it sounds like Cathy did an incredible job to take her “once in a lifetime” trophy. Great job to everyone involved in this hunt. All of you who spent time out on the mountain did everything right for a very successful sheep hunt. Thanks so much for sharing your pics and story Larry.

I’ve heard of salmon jumping into boats, but never anything quite like this…Tom Satre told the Sitka Gazette that he was out

with a charter group on his 62-foot fishing vessel when four juvenile black-tailed deer swam directly toward his boat.

Deer Fishing

“Once the deer reached the boat, the four began to circle the boat, looking directly at us. We could tell right away that the

young bucks were distressed. I opened up my back gate and we helped the typically skittish and absolutely wild animals

onto the boat. In all my years fishing, I’ve never seen anything quite like it! Once onboard, they collapsed with exhaustion, shivering.”

“This is a picture I took of the rescued bucks on the back of my boat, the Alaska Quest. We headed for Taku Harbour.

Once we reached the dock, the first buck that we had been pulled from the water hopped onto the dock, looked back as if

to say ‘thank you’ and disappeared into the forest. After a bit of prodding and assistance, two more followed, but the smallest

deer needed a little more help.

This is me carrying the little guy.

My daughter, Anna, and son, Tim, helped the last buck to its feet. We didn’t know how long they had been in the icy waters

or if there had been others who did not survive. My daughter latertold me that the experience was something that she would

never forget, and I suspect the deer felt the same way as well!”
