The idea sounds insane, rather like diving the Marianas Trench with mask and flippers or hunting Siberian tigers with a squirt gun. Aficionados of the sport must be folks with histories of irrational behavior: former test pilots, say, or retired WWF champions. Putting aside for a moment the preposterous assumption that fish the size of trolley cars really can be battled into submission on wispy lines, what do you do with the damn things once they’re alongside the boat? Take a picture and hope they don’t respond by killing you and everyone you know? Put on a feed for the city of Cleveland? There are definitely some issues with the sport, but years ago it had its enthusiasts – and none were greater than Australian Alfred Dean.

Despite the white shark’s fearsome reputation as a man-eater, it’s in fact rather less impressive when hooked on sporting tackle. As a result, relatively few anglers have ever pursued the species with much vigor. For his part, Alf Dean did not take up big-game fishing until after WWII when he was already middle aged.

Dean’s father was a legendary Aussie bushman who studied and emulated the techniques of local Aborigines. Alf grew up hunting and fishing, even keeping a gun in his locker at school so he could shoot ducks and rabbits after class. Once, when nabbed by an understanding warden with a brace of out-of-season ducks, he was released after pleading that he’d only fired in self-defense after being attacked by the berserk waterfowl. Clearly, this was a young man bound for shark-fishing greatness. Read the rest of this entry »

FMAH Trophy Contest – Johnny Trujillo – The Coin Flip Buck – Utah – Mule Deer – Non Typical – Hunting #26

Mule Deer

The Coin Flip Buck

Put this picture on your website, the middle girl is Maddie Adair and the two on the outside are my girls, Courtney and Brianna. The story is Chris Halterman shot and wounded the buck and I put it down so Chris and myself flipped a coin to see who was going to claim it and I won. So it should be known as the coin flip buck. Make sure you mention that Maddie spotted it for us and a special thanks to Shain Adair for leaving the hunt early and leaving his daughter with me to spot this great buck. It scored 195 6/8 non typical and is 29 inches wide with 7 inches of mass. It is a 7x6Johnny

Among the many stones in my country canine cemetery are a select few which stand to their own.

Apart, as the dogs beneath them did, the moment they were born. They number only four and sooner than later now – when my own days are spent, and the better part of me lies there with them  – I expect at most but six. Could I live long enough to breed and have and hunt over another hundred, I know as a dog man there could be only a small few more.

A great and ancient cedar tree soldiers and shelters their graves and a small lamp collects the sun each day, to push aside the darkness from their nights.

Of the scores of pointing dogs that have bettered my life, they were the most virtuous. They are The Honesty Brigade. Within my heart, the warmth of their memory fuels a grateful, eternal flame.

I’ve had dogs that split the wind, that scorched the ground with hot, blistering speed, that would carry an edge until they knocked a hole in the horizon. Dogs so strong and driven they could bring a hard-and-ready walking horse to a lather in the space of an hour. Dogs so bold and independent that to break them required an agent and a contract. Dogs so brilliant they could put your heart in your throat with the savvy of a single find.

Glory dogs.  Read the rest of this entry »
